Educational Resources

Living with a serious disease is not easy. People with cancer and those who care about them face many problems and challenges. Having helpful information can make it easier to cope with these problems.

ACS Cancer Resource Center at the Mercy North Cancer Center

The only ACS Cancer Resource Center in the Knoxville area, the center is a free community service for the people of Knoxville and East Tennessee.  The Cancer Resource Center is a designated space within the Mercy Cancer Center where trained and certified volunteers provide support to cancer patients, their family members and caregivers.

The Cancer Resource Center is staffed with volunteers on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 AM to noon.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the center is staffed from 1 PM to 4:30 PM.  During other hours, more information is available at 865-584-1668 (toll free at 1-800-227-2345) or by visiting the ACS Web site at www.cancer.org.

The ACS continues to seek volunteers to help staff the facility. Anyone wishing to serve as a volunteer should have some basic computer experience but most of all, they should be good listeners and compassionate to the needs of cancer patients. For more information about volunteering to help staff the Cancer Resource Center, contact the volunteer coordinator, Jo Gault, at 865-558-4044.

Breast Cancer is the most frequently diagnosed non-skin cancer in American women. An estimated 192,370 American women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. The risk of breast cancer increases as women get older. Over the years, researchers have identified certain characteristics, usually called risk factors, which influence a woman's chance of getting the disease. Still, many women who develop breast cancer have no known risk factors other than growing older, and many women with known risk factors do not develop breast cancer. The key is to get tested so it is diagnosed early! Knowing your risk profile will enable you to take control of your health and provide you with the best defense against breast cancer. This free risk assessment will take about 5 minutes to complete. At the end, you will receive personalized, strictly confidential information.
