6th Annual Silver Lamp Nursing Awards
Mercy Health Partners Foundation held the 6th Annual Silver Lamp Nursing Awards on Thursday, February 25, 2010, at The Foundry. Nominees and their guests were invited to enjoy dinner with the award presentation following.
With nurses being essential to the health and well being of the people in our region it is important to celebrate and honor our nurses publicly for the service they provide patients. With the shortage in funding for nursing education and certification, the purpose of these awards are to provide an impact through uses including tuition, continuing education, certifications and other educational endeavors.
In its 1st year, the Silver Lamp Awards provided 13 scholarships and has now, in its 6th year, grown to be able to fund 33 scholarship awards to deserving nurses. Mercy is proud to be able to continue to provide these awards to nurses and appreciates the continued support of those who have made it possible.
Congratulations to this year’s winners!

Cancer Gala XVI
On March 6th, 260 guests attended the Cancer Gala XVI at Cherokee Country Club to honor this year's Joy Dirksen Baker Award winner, while enjoying an evening of dinner and dancing. The Joy Dirksen Baker Award was named to honor Joy's courageous 11 year battle with cancer. Every year, the award is presented to a person or an organization that has been affected by cancer or has made a difference in the lives of those who are battling the disease. We are proud to announce this year's recipient was The Wellness Community of East Tennessee.
The Wellness Community began in 1990 to provide support services and education for those or family and friends of those who are battling cancer. They have helped approximately 9,000 people since opening 20 years ago. The Wellness Community plays a vital role to the lives of those in our community with cancer and continues to provide emotional support, education and hope to people affected with cancer each and every day.
Senator Howard Baker and wife, Senator Nancy Kassabaum Baker, (front row) along with their son Darek Baker (second row, second from left) congratulate members of The Wellness Community Board.
Senator Howard Baker and wife Nancy enjoy the evening with Bo Shafer and granddaughter, Blakely Shuler. Bo and his late wife Mary were the 2009 Joy Dirksen Baker recipients.
