Overview
A cognitive disorder is anything that affects a person’s mental, learning or memory abilities. These can also be called neurocognitive disorders, as they involve a person’s brain. A person with a cognitive disorder may have problems properly communicating, solving problems, understanding language, making decisions, or perceiving and understanding relationships of an object with their environment.
The most common cognitive disorders are delirium, dementia and amnesia. Delirium occurs over a short period of time as a person experiences a loss of awareness in their ability to think clearly and their surroundings. In dementia, a person experiences a progressive decline of memory loss, thinking and concentration problems. Amnesia involves memory loss, without other symptoms.
