TOLEDO, Ohio (March 17, 2023) – Friday, March 17 isn’t just about the luck of the Irish. For thousands of medical students around the country, it is also the day they celebrated learning where they would spend their years in medical residency.

Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center Graduate Medical Education (GME) program matched 60 incoming physician residents across 13 programs as part of the annual National Resident Matching Program Match Day. After months of rotations, exams, completing applications, and interviews with sought after residency programs, these medical students will continue their training in Toledo in the St. Vincent GME program, which has been in place since 1896.

“We are excited to bring 60 outstanding new training physicians to the Toledo area,” said Dr. Randall Schlievert, vice president for Academic Affairs, Mercy Health – Toledo. “Mercy Health’s GME is another important commitment we make to our community and patients as it provides a next generation of world-class physicians trained with our mission to extend good help to all those in need.”

Mercy Health — St. Vincent Medical Center's graduate medical education has earned a regional reputation for excellence and holds Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) continued institutional accreditation.  Mercy Health offers residency programs in Cardiovascular Disease; Hospice and Palliative Care; Family Medicine; Emergency Medicine; Pediatrics; Ob-Gyn; Neurology; Transitional Year; Orthopedics; General Surgery; Endovascular neurology; Internal Medicine; and Podiatry.

Mercy Health’s experienced faculty provides a challenging and supportive environment for residents to grow and gain essential skills, preparing them to emerge as the doctors of tomorrow. Each year, Mercy Health introduces dozens of new doctors to the community, many of whom stay to continue caring for patients in Northwest Ohio.

“The results of the recent match attest to the quality and depth of Mercy Health’s GME programs,” said Dr. James Tita, chief clinical officer, Mercy Health - Toledo. “We look forward to having such a talented and accomplished group of young physicians join our training programs.
