Mercy Official Warns of Fraudulent Phone Solicitation Campaign

--March 2, 2009

An official with Mercy Health Partners is warning the public about a fraudulent telephone solicitation asking for money for the St. Mary’s Foundation.

Jerry Askew, Mercy senior vice president for External Affairs, said that Mercy has been notified of calls being received in the community asking for money on behalf of the St. Mary’s Foundation to provide free mammograms.

“Mercy is not sponsoring any phone solicitation campaign for anything right now,” Askew said.  “In fact, the charitable donation functions of St. Mary’s have been merged with its counterpart at Baptist to form the Mercy Health Partners Foundation, so no one is authorized to raise funds for the St. Mary’s Foundation now or in the future.”

Askew said that local law enforcement officials have been notified of this potential fraudulent fundraising activity.  Anyone receiving a call asking for money for the St. Mary’s Foundation is asked to call 911 to report the incident.
