Cancer Screenings and Prevention

Educating the community about the importance of screenings is resulting in earlier detection. Mercy Health’s community health initiatives are providing more opportunities for those in our communities to receive screenings and Mercy Health regionally has significantly increased access care for our patients.

Genetic Testing:

Mercy Health, through a collaboration with Akron Children’s hospital, offers a comprehensive range of clinical and laboratory services as well as educational programs for individuals with, or at risk for heredity disorders. Services include consultation, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and genetic counseling for genetic disorders.

Breast Cancer Screening:

The American Cancer Society recommends yearly mammograms starting at age 40 and continuing as long as you are in good health. For younger women, breast self-exam is an option starting in your 20s and is important to continue as you age. The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center (JACBCC) is accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Cancer and features 3D digital mammography. To schedule an appointment, call 330-480-2654.

The JACBCC Mobile Mammography Van visits community family practice offices, community centers, libraries, etc. throughout the month. You do not need a physician script to get a screening on the van. For more information call the center at 330-480-2654.

Lung Cancer Screening:

Screening is recommended for people who are at a high risk for lung cancer, over 55, current or past smoking history. If you have a doctor, contact them for a referral. Simply tell them you want to take part in the Mercy Health Lung Cancer Screening Program. If you meet the criteria for lung cancer screening, your doctor will be able to schedule your chest CT at a Mercy Health facility.

Patients suffering from lung problems who are 55 and older and are at high risk, can ask their physician for a referral to the MH Lung cancer screening program. Please call 330-480-3433.

Prostate Screening:

Man Up Mahoning Valley is a prostate cancer awareness and screening program at Mercy Health - Youngstown. Urology professionals who support Man Up Mahoning Valley suggest annual prostate screening for all men beginning at age 40. A complete prostate cancer screening involves both a digital rectal exam (DRE) and a prostate specific antigen blood test (PSA). Man Up Mahoning Valley sponsors multiple prostate cancer screening opportunities throughout the year for those who are uninsured or underinsured.
