Whether you are suffering from a highly critical condition, such as respiratory distress, severe trauma or organ failure, or you’re recovering from a surgical treatment, all Mercy Health hospitals include an intensive care unit that supplies expert, around-the-clock monitoring and support from trained critical care specialists. Seriously ill patients require close observation and specialized care, and our critical care services offer state-of-the-art medical equipment and a trained staff of doctors, nurses, physical therapists and more to ensure that you are well taken care of. ICU patients, depending on their conditions and treatments, are monitored by a variety of machines to monitor heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and more. Patients experiencing respiratory issues are assisted with ventilators until they are able to begin breathing on their own.
One of the biggest differences between a critical care unit and the other wards within a hospital is the high staff-to-patient ratio. By limiting the number of patients that our ICU staff are caring for to one or two, we are able to provide the level of careful treatment and observation that intensive care patients require. Patients may be transferred directly to an intensive care unit from the emergency department if their condition warrants critical care, from another hospital ward if their condition worsens or following a surgery that is very invasive or that carries high risk of complications.
