Mercy Health has announced that Imran Andrabi, M.D., president and chief executive officer, Mercy Health – Toledo Region, and senior vice president, Mercy Health, will leave the organization, effective May 26.

Dr. Andrabi recently accepted a position as president and chief executive officer at ThedaCare, a seven-hospital health system serving northeast Wisconsin.

“Dr. Andrabi has been a strong, longstanding leader at Mercy Health and has done tremendous work to strengthen our mission of improving the health of the northwest Ohio community,” said John M. Starcher, Jr., president and CEO, Mercy Health.  “His thoughtful approach as a physician leader to providing patient-centered care has helped to advance the entire organization to new levels of patient service and clinical excellence.”

During his 25-year tenure at Mercy Health, Dr. Andrabi has greatly enhanced access to healthcare in the northwest Ohio community by expanding the ministry’s employed physician group to more than 320 physicians located across the region, and its affiliated network of physicians to more than 600.

He was instrumental in bringing free standing emergency centers to the Sylvania and Perrysburg communities and enhanced primary care and outpatient services to the east-of-the-river markets through the opening of the Mercy Health - Oregon Medical Center. Most recently, under his leadership, Mercy Health opened the region’s first dedicated cancer center in Perrysburg, in partnership with physicians from the Toledo Clinic and Toledo Radiation Oncology.

Dr. Andrabi was named president and CEO for Mercy Health – Toledo in 2015. He joined the organization as a family medicine resident in 1992 and his passion for improving the healthcare of the Northwest Ohio community has made a difference for millions of patients over his tenure. Throughout the past 25 years, Dr. Andrabi has held numerous leadership positions prior to his appointment as president and CEO, including serving as president of Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center; vice president of graduate medical education; and chief medical officer for Mercy Health – Toledo Physicians group.

Brian Smith, chief operating officer, Mercy Health, will serve as interim executive leader while a search for a new president and CEO is conducted. In his role as chief operating officer of the 23-hospital Mercy Health system, Smith has responsibility for the seven Mercy Health regions across Ohio and Kentucky, including Toledo. In addition, Smith previously served as the executive leader in the Toledo region, which brings significant knowledge of the market, as well as strong relationships with physicians and community leaders.
