Mercy Health is Presenting Partner of Crosstown Showdown, the Annual High School Football Extravaganza

(CINCINNATI; May 1, 2014) – Mercy Health, which provides advanced, compassionate, quality care in your neighborhood through its care network, announces that as part of a multiyear commitment, Mercy Health – Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine will serve as a presenting partner of the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown.

The Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown is the nation’s premier high school football showcase and the longest running event of its kind in the United States. The season-opening high school football showcase, which first kicked off in 1998, provides a stage for the region’s elite high school football programs. More than half a million fans have watched Showdown games and the showcase draws national attention.

Last year’s field of 54 schools playing 27 games was largest in event history and this year’s Showdown, which begins in Ohio on August 27, promises to please fans, too. Teams will play 20-plus games over a three-week period in Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, Southeast Indiana, Dayton and Columbus. Adding to the anticipation is the fact that this year’s field features three defending Ohio state champions kicking off their seasons at the Showdown: Moeller (Division I), Loveland (II) and Clinton-Massie (IV).

“Physicians with Mercy Health Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine will award Most Valuable Player plaques to one player from each team at every game. Many of Mercy Health’s dream team of orthopaedic and sports medicine specialists are team physicians with the high schools playing in the tournament, so we expect friendly rivalry both on and off the field,” said Yousuf J. Ahmad, Mercy Health Market President and CEO.

“Because fans deserve recognition for the amazing support they give this showcase, I’m pleased to announce that for the first time ever, Mercy Health Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine will also present a special Fan of the Game award at each of the Showdown games,” added Ahmad. “We’ll be checking the stands at each game for the winning fan and announcing the lucky winner of a great prize package between the first and second quarters of each game.”

To boost fans’ energy levels, Mercy Health will host two Showdown pep rallies in August. The first takes place from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, August 17 at Mercy Health – West Hospital, located at 3300 Mercy Health Blvd., Cincinnati 45211. The second takes place from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, August 24 at Mercy Health –Wellington Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine, Anderson, located at 7575 Five Mile Road, Cincinnati 45230.

Mercy Health – West Hospital will also host a news conference on Monday, May 12, during which event organizers will unveil the complete Showdown schedule to media along with athletic directors, head football coaches, sponsors and athletic trainers from the participating schools.

The Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown has chosen Mercy Health’s social service agencies St. John in Over-the-Rhine and St. Raphael in Hamilton as its charities of choice. The Crosstown Showdown will make a donation to Mercy Health - St. John and St. Raphael and will also collect school supplies and canned goods during the pep rallies and marquee games to benefit the agencies’ clients. Mercy Health’s social service agencies help those in need during times of crisis, providing much needed access to basic necessities to help families get back on their feet.
