Mercy Health - Cincinnati Employees Help Two Boys with Disabilities Participate in the Cincinnati Zoo's Cheetah Run

(CINCINNATI; August 26, 2015) – Mercy Health, which provides advanced, quality, compassionate care in your neighborhood through its care network, announces that a team of 14 runners, including 13 from Mercy Health – West Hospital, has been training to ensure that Stevie and Majestic, two local boys with disabilities, will have the run of their lives at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden’s upcoming Cheetah Run. The run starts at 8 a.m. on Sunday, August 30 at the Zoo, located at 3400 Vine St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45220.

The West Hospital team, comprised of doctors, nurses and representatives from pharmacy, infusion, wound care, physical therapy and occupational therapy, has been training together with a Xavier student under Run for Greatness, Inc. guidelines to safely push the boys in special chairs designed for them. Run for Greatness, Inc. is a non-profit organization that provides people with disabilities (especially children) a chance to participate in and benefit from the excitement and sense of accomplishment that finishing a race provides.

“These boys have never participated in an event like the Cheetah Run before,” said Diane Cucinotta, nursing manager of the Wound Care Center at West Hospital. “Seeing their smiles as they tested their special running chairs for comfort has given us, their support team, all the motivation we need to give them a run to remember!”

The boys’ parents have said this activity will bring these young men much joy and Stevie and Majestic will have a large group of supporters at the zoo cheering them on.

The Auxiliary of West Hospital is sponsoring the boys’ run and Mercy Health supports the Cheetah Run as part of its “Walk on the Wild Side” partnership. The Cheetah Run is the Zoo’s annual 5k that lets participants Run Wild and it celebrates its 36th anniversary this year.
