Advancements in Ankle Replacement Surgery

New Navigation System Leads To More Accurate Ankle Replacement Surgery

The same conditions that plague hips and knees – age, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, fractures and other injuries – also affect ankles, causing pain and loss of mobility as cartilage wears away, leaving bone to grind on bone. This can affect even the most routine activities, such as standing, walking and taking the stairs.

A new technological advancement in ankle replacement surgery – PROPHECY® Preoperative Navigation Guides – is allowing surgeons to more precisely align ankle implants before surgery. This results in more accurate placement during surgery, less time in the operating room and getting back to your life sooner.

Using a combination of a CT scan and 3D computer analysis, physicians can evaluate the placement of the new joint before surgery, allowing for:

  • A greater level of precision in the position and alignment of the implant during surgery.
  • More bone preservation.
  •  Less time spent in the operating room.
  •  A longer lifespan for the implant.

MAKOplasty®

Makoplasty

MAKOplasty® for Partial Knee Resurfacing and Total Hip Replacement

Powered by the RIO® Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopedic System, MAKOplasty® is allowing surgeons to achieve a new level of accuracy. As a result, some patients have experienced:

  •  shorter hospital stays
  •  quicker recovery
  •  less pain
  •  a more natural feeling joint
  •  less scarring and the preservation of healthy bone and tissue

If you are a candidate for the MAKOplasty® procedure, a CT Scan will be taken of your knee or hip one to two weeks prior to surgery. This is used to create a unique, patient-specific 3-D model. A surgical plan is then created for the placement and alignment of the implant before surgery.

During surgery, the surgeon guides the robotic arm using the precise measurements from the 3-D model to achieve optimal positioning of the implant.

Surgeries are performed at Jewish Hospital and Anderson Hospital.

AlterG - Anti-Gravity Treadmill

AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill

A revolutionary approach to rehabilitation and training

The AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill is now available at Mercy Health to help post-surgery patients and serious runners recover even faster. The new technology enables patients to participate in rehabilitative exercises sooner and with less pain.

With the AlterG, patients can run and walk without bearing their entire weight, reducing the impact on their bodies to optimize their rehabilitation and physical therapy progress.

The AlterG features an inflatable air chamber that surrounds the user’s lower body and gently lifts him or her off the treadmill to achieve a body weight that’s 20-99% of the user’s actual weight. In other words, if you weigh 200 pounds and use the AlterG at the 20% setting, you can run as if you weigh 40 pounds, lowering the impact on your joints and muscles drastically.

The AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill, the world’s first and only treadmill using NASA-based anti-gravity technology, is available at Mercy Health.
