When testing for osteoporosis, there are two types of painless tests, one of which is the Achilles or heel screening. This test uses ultrasound instead of X-ray and measures the bone density in the heel only. The test takes only five minutes to complete and a physician’s order is not required.

Heel scans are for screening purposes only, to see if you may need a more thorough test for osteoporosis (DEXA scan).  They should not be used as a final diagnosis to check if treatment is needed.

This FREE screening for osteoporosis is available at the Women’s Wellness Center, Putnam County Ambulatory Care Center, Delphos Ambulatory Care Center or St. Rita’s Mammography at Wapakoneta.
