Welcome to surgery at Lourdes. Our team of board-certified surgeons and surgical specialists are dedicated to providing you with the most comprehensive surgical care with a focus on clinical excellence and optimal patient outcomes.
Prior to surgery
You have met with your surgeon, gotten a second opinion, if desired, and now you are scheduled to have the operation. You probably have a lot of questions; our staff is here to answer each and every one. The next step is to speak with the preoperative nurse; she is available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. in offices conveniently located on the 1st Floor of the Marshall Nemer Pavilion.
At your appointment, the nurse will record your medical history, identify any potential risks that may exist and administer testing that may be requested (blood testing, chest x-ray, EKG, or respiratory) based on your age, physical condition, overall health and the type of your scheduled surgery. If you have a history of heart or lung problems, your regular cardiologist or internist may be asked to provide a medical recommendation. It is essential that your health be at its best.
We will need a list of all medications you’re taking and the current dosages including:
- Prescription and nonprescription medications
- Herbal or vitamin supplements, and
- Any illegal drugs which may negatively interact with the anesthesia.
If you take medications regularly, you will be advised which ones to take prior to surgery. Diabetic patients will need special instructions regarding insulin or oral medication dosing in preparation for the surgical procedure.
Our goal is to provide you with guidelines for presurgical and postsurgical care, potential side effects and complications, discharge/follow-up and home care and any other information related to the recovery process. Together, we are a team. In some cases, you may discuss your anesthesia and surgical preparation by telephone instead of at a visit to our facility.
