Let’s talk robotic surgery

We want you and your family to be completely educated on and fully prepared for your surgery. Take a look at the questions and answers below. Should you have something else to ask? Just give us a call at 419-251-ROBO (7626).

What is robotic surgery?
Robotic surgery is a more technologically-advanced approach to surgery than traditional open surgery or laparoscopic surgery. We use the daVinci® Surgical System in which the surgeon manipulates robotic arms to operate using very small incisions. This system provides surgeons with greater surgical precision, increased range of motion, superior dexterity and enhanced 3D vision of the surgery area.

Why choose us for robotic surgery?
Our doctors, nurses and clinical staff have more experience using the system than any other area healthcare provider. We have the highest volume of robotic surgery cases in the city of Toledo with decades of experience. Combined, our certified surgical technician staff has over 75 years of surgical experience, our nurses have over 185 years of experience, and together, we have nearly 5,000 hours of robotic surgery experience.

We’ve used the daVinci® equipment for first-of-its-kind procedures in Northwest Ohio including the first:

  • Robotic total endoscopic coronary artery bypass (TECAB) procedure
  • Robotic endometriosis resection
  • Robotic hysterectomy
  • Robotic prostatectomy
  • Robotic nephrectomy
  • Robotic partial nephrectomy
  • Robotic adrenalectomy
  • Robotic urinary diversion
  • Robotic ureteral reconstruction
  • Robotic nephroureterectomy

What robotic procedures do you offer?
We’re able to provide surgical treatments for numerous gynecology, urology, general, bariatric, cardiothoracic and pulmonary conditions including:

  • Bowel resection
  • Cholecystectomy
  • Hernia repair
  • Hysterectomy
  • Myomectomy
  • Prostatectomy
  • Cystectomy
  • Nephrectomy
  • Partial nephrectomy
  • Total endoscopic coronary artery bypass
  • Mediastinal lymph node biopsy
  • Mitral valve repair
  • Endometriosis resection
  • Sacrocolpopexy
  • Single port cholecystectomy
  • Lung resection with node dissection

What are the benefits of robotic surgery compared with traditional surgery?
Tons! Here are just a few:

  • Smaller incisions
  • More precise surgical control
  • Less scarring
  • Less post-operative pain and reduced need for narcotic pain medication during recovery
  • Less blood loss and reduced need for blood transfusion during surgery
  • Lower rate of wound infection
  • Fewer complications
  • Shorter operative time
  • Shorter hospital stay and faster return to normal daily activities

Is robotic surgery covered by insurance?
As with all medical procedures, your insurance plan coverage determines your surgical benefits, so please contact them directly.

Does robotic surgery make the surgeon unnecessary?

The daVinci® Surgical System relies entirely on the expertise of the surgeon who is physically present in the room and directing every step of the surgery. The surgeon must operate the system, guide the arms and perform the procedure. The robotic system is a tool that cannot function without a surgeon.

Will I feel any pain with a robotic procedure?
Everyone reacts differently to a surgical procedure; however numerous clinical studies have shown that patients who choose robotic surgery tend to have less post-operative pain than patients who have traditional surgery.

How do I know if I am a candidate for a robotic procedure?
Eligibility for robotic surgery depends on several factors that your doctor can help you out with.

Are there any unique risks to having robotic surgery?
As with any type of major surgery, robotic surgery carries a degree of risk, which your doctor will discuss with you prior to scheduling. Know that robotic surgery does not present any additional or more significant risks than traditional surgical approaches. In fact, the high-degree of precision actually minimizes risks.

What should I expect before surgery?

Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted and escorted to our preoperative area where you’ll be prepped by a nurse and anesthesiologist. Often your surgeon will also stop by to see if you have questions or concerns.

What should I expect during my surgery?
You’ll meet each staff member while in the operating room, and the nurse will make sure your loved ones receive periodic updates on the progress of your surgery.

How long will my surgery last?

The length of your surgery will depend on several factors, but it’s typically shorter than traditional surgery.

What happens if there is a complication with the robotic equipment during surgery?

If a complication with the robotic equipment were to occur or if the procedure is too difficult to perform robotically, our surgeons are very experienced in conventional surgery techniques.

What should I expect after surgery?

You’ll be transferred to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit where we’ll closely monitor you to ensure a smooth transition to the recovery unit. Before being discharged from the hospital, nursing staff will answer any questions you have about your care and any restrictions. Specific instructions, after surgery care and full recovery time varies depending on the type of surgery. Typically, you’ll schedule a follow-up visit with your surgeon, too. The most important thing to concentrate on after you get home is to take care of yourself. If you have any questions regarding your surgery or recovery, consult your doctor immediately.

How long will it take for me to recover from surgery?

Recovery times vary, however robotic surgery has proven to reduce recovery times, shorten hospital stays and help you return to your normal daily activities more quickly than traditional surgery.
