Department of Research

Mercy Health - Youngstown offers residents, faculty and attendings a unique opportunity to engage in scholarly activities and research. 

The Department of Research offers didactics and lectures to residency programs in statistics, research design and methods and other related topics. The Sr. Director Medical Education and Research, David Gemmel, PhD, also participates in department journal clubs. 

Services provided by the Department of Research include biostatistical consulting, manuscript editing, proposal development, and human subjects protection. 

The Department also is responsible for the Mercy Health Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the Medical Research Committee (MRC), which provides peer review and funding for intra-mural research. 

In addition, the Medical Research Committee and faculty host an annual Resident Research Day, where residents and faculty compete for awards in both poster and oral venues.  

Other staff in the department include clinical research coordinators and research assistants. The nursing staff has extensive clinical trial experience with both government and industry sponsored research in drug and device studies. During the summer months, the department offers internship opportunities for students.
