Mercy Health - St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital has been designated as a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission (TJC) since 2004. The hospital was one of the first TJC-certified hospitals in Ohio and in the Mahoning Valley, earning The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for its primary stroke program.
Mercy Health - St. Elizabeth Hospital achieved Primary Stroke Center status through strict adherence to TJC’s national standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific care. The certification recognizes St. Elizabeth’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s quality and safety standards.
The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification Program, launched in 2002, evaluates clinical programs across the full continuum of care. Certification requirements address three core areas:
• Compliance with consensus-based national standards.
• Effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care.
• Organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.
Mercy Health - St. Elizabeth Hospital has successfully undergone rigorous on-site surveys every two years since 2004. During these surveys, a team of Joint Commission experts evaluate St. Elizabeth for compliance with national standards of stroke care.
Mercy Health - St. Elizabeth’s Primary Stroke Center is proud of the outstanding, quality care delivered by the entire stroke team, including the physician stroke center director, RN coordinator and teams of nurses, physicians, therapists and other health care professionals – from the emergency department to rehabilitation services. Through the efforts of these teams of caregivers, the patient’s course of treatment is coordinated, efficient and follows national standards.
