What is thoracentesis?

Thoracentesis is a procedure that removes extra fluid from the space between the lungs and the chest wall. This space is called the pleural space. Taking out this fluid can help you breathe better and feel more comfortable.

Who is a candidate for thoracentesis?

You may need a thoracentesis procedure if you have too much fluid around your lungs that causes pain or trouble breathing.

  • People with fluid from infections like pneumonia
  • People with cancer near the lungs
  • People with heart, kidney or liver problems
  • People who feel short of breath from fluid buildup

What to expect during thoracentesis

Thoracentesis is done in a clinic or hospital. You will be awake but your skin will be numbed.

  • You will sit and lean forward slightly
  • The doctor will clean and numb your back
  • A thin needle is placed between your ribs to remove the fluid
  • The fluid may be sent to a lab for testing

What are the risks for thoracentesis?

Thoracentesis is usually safe but can have some risks.

  • Pain or discomfort during or after the procedure
  • Bleeding where the needle goes in
  • Infection
  • A lung may collapse in rare cases
