In 2003 The Heart Lab was opened specifically for patients with cardiovascular problems, highlighting 4 decades of cardiac excellence in cardiac surgery. In 2008 for the second year in a row, St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital was named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals for cardiovascular care, an award based on an independent review of patients' outcome data. The advanced cardiac surgery suites and inpatient units provide some of the region's most sophisticated care. The Heart Lab at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital provides outpatient cardiac care and cardiac procedures in a comfortable, hotel-like environment. Each year, more than 500 open heart surgeries are performed at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

All surgeons may admit, evaluate, diagnose, consult, and provide preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative surgical care and correct or treat various condition, illnesses, and injuries of the surgical anatomy. The minimum number of procedures must be performed in a 2-year period to comply with appointment and reappointment criteria.
