Sometimes pregnancy doesn’t go as smoothly as expected. When complications arise, the maternal-fetal medicine specialists at Mercy Health can help. Women who seek consultation from or care by a maternal-fetal medicine specialist do so because they are considered “at risk” and are considering becoming pregnant or because they are pregnant and “high risk,” “complicated,” or otherwise worried about their pregnancy.
Our specialists care for women dealing with a wide-range of conditions. They see patients who are undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, such as comprehensive ultrasound, chorionic villus sampling and genetic amniocentesis, fetal surgery or treatment. They also see women with medical or surgical disorders such as heart disease, high blood pressure, preeclampsia, diabetes or other endocrine disorders, kidney or gastrointestinal disease or infectious diseases. Our maternal-fetal medicine specialists may also care for women whose pregnancy is at markedly increased risk for adverse outcomes such as abnormal AFP (alpha fetoprotein) blood test; twins, triplets or more; recurrent pre-term labor and delivery; recurrent pregnancy loss; and suspected fetal growth restriction (baby not growing enough).
And when it’s time to deliver, these mothers have the comfort of knowing that the Akron Children's Level IIB Special Care Nursery at St. Joseph Warren Hospital and the Akron Children’s Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Elizabeth Boardman is also available and prepared to handle most emergencies. These highly skilled nurses and board-certified neonatologists offer intensive care, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Neonatologists attend all high-risk deliveries and care for premature and other sick newborns.
Dr. Zarlingo, Dr. Khawli and Dr. Philipson work closely with their patients’ physicians to provide personalized, high-quality care. So, you can feel reassured knowing that highly specialized care is always there.
