What is A1C testing?
An A1C test is a simple blood test that measures your average blood sugar (glucose) levels over the past 2 to 3 months. It’s often used to diagnose or monitor diabetes and prediabetes. Unlike a regular blood sugar test, you don’t need to fast before an A1C.
Who is a candidate for A1C testing?
A1C testing is recommended for:
- Adults and children at risk for type 2 diabetes
- People with symptoms of diabetes, like frequent urination or unusual thirst
- Anyone already diagnosed with diabetes to track how well their treatment is working
What to expect during A1C testing
A healthcare provider will take a small blood sample from your arm or finger. The test only takes a few minutes and can often be done at a doctor’s office, clinic, or lab. You don’t need to stop eating or drinking before the test.
What are the risks for A1C testing?
Risks are very low. You might feel a quick pinch or notice minor bruising where the blood was drawn, but serious side effects are rare.
What does recovery from A1C testing entail?
There’s no recovery needed. After the test, you can go back to your normal activities right away. Your doctor will explain the results and, if needed, help you make a plan for managing your blood sugar.
