Overview
Clinical pathology involves the medical testing of bodily fluids, such as blood or urine samples, and is generally focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Clinical pathologists examine samples using microscopes and other diagnostic tools, to observe levels of certain chemicals and other substances in the body.
Anatomic pathology, or anatomical pathology, involves the medical testing of organs and tissue samples. Anatomic pathology is frequently used to identify various types of tumors or cancers and to evaluate kidney and liver diseases, autoimmune disorders and infections. Any tissue removed during surgery must be examined by a pathologist.
