What is a basic metabolic panel (BMP)?

A basic metabolic panel (BMP) is a blood test that checks key substances in your blood like glucose, calcium, and electrolytes. It helps your doctor understand how your kidneys are working, how your body is using energy, and whether your blood chemistry is in balance. It’s a common test that gives a quick snapshot of your overall health.

Who is a candidate for a BMP?

You may need a BMP if you:

  • Are having symptoms like fatigue, confusion, or trouble breathing
  • Have a chronic condition like high blood pressure, diabetes, or kidney disease
  • Are starting a new medication that could affect your kidneys or electrolytes
  • Need routine lab work as part of a check-up or hospital stay

What to expect during a BMP

A healthcare provider will draw a small blood sample from your arm. The test usually takes just a few minutes. In some cases, you may be asked to fast (not eat or drink) for 8–12 hours before the test, especially if your doctor also ordered a glucose check.

What are the risks for a BMP?

The risks are very low. You might feel a little sting or have minor bruising where the needle goes in, but serious problems are rare.

What does recovery from a BMP entail?

There’s no recovery needed. You can go back to your normal activities right after the test. Your provider will follow up with results and explain what they mean for your health or treatment plan.
