What is a muscle contusion (bruise)?

A muscle contusion is a soft tissue injury that occurs when a direct blow or impact damages muscle fibers and blood vessels, causing bleeding under the skin. This leads to discoloration, swelling, and soreness at the site of injury.

Causes of a muscle contusion

Muscle contusions typically happen after a direct blow or impact to the body. This trauma may occur during sports, falls, or accidents and results in bleeding within the muscle tissue.

Risk factors for a muscle contusion

  • Participation in contact or high-risk sports (e.g., football, rugby, hockey)
  • Not wearing protective gear during physical activity
  • Muscle fatigue or lack of proper warm-up before exercise

Symptoms of a muscle contusion

  • Tenderness, swelling, and skin discoloration (bruising)
  • Stiffness or limited range of motion in the affected area
  • Pain that may worsen with movement or pressure

Diagnosing a muscle contusion

Diagnosis is often based on a physical exam and patient history. Imaging, such as an ultrasound or MRI, may be used to evaluate the extent of the injury or rule out more severe damage.

Treatment of a muscle contusion

Initial care might include rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) to reduce swelling and discomfort. Further treatment can involve gentle stretching, pain management, and possibly physical therapy if the contusion is severe.
