Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
At the Allison Radiation Oncology Center, St. Rita’s offers Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) to treat cancer patients. IMRT is a specialized treatment that allows for even more precise shaping of the radiation field by breaking up the radiation beam into smaller parts and varies the intensity of the radiation beam, which allows for delivery of higher doses to tumors and/or further limits the dose to healthy tissue.
IMRT safely treats tumors which are located very close to delicate organs like the eye, spinal cord or rectum. Simply put, this can translate into a higher cancer control rate and a lower rate of side effects.
