St. Rita’s Medical Center offers driving evaluations, which are designed to help you and your family determine your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.

What can cause driving skills to deteriorate?
There are many factors that can contribute to a decline in driving skills.  These can include, but are not limited to: natural aging process, physical injury, medical conditions, and a change in mental capabilities.

Can I benefit?
If you have noticed any difficulty with driving skills, or your family member has noticed a change, it is important to get tested for driving safety.  It is in the best interest of yourself, your family, and your community.

How does the program work?
An occupational therapist will perform a two hour evaluation using a driving simulator and other specific equipment to determine whether your mental ability and physical skills still allow you to drive safely.  If potential problems are identified, the therapist will recommend appropriate referrals and/or treatments to assist in maintaining your independence.

How do I get an appointment?
You need to contact your family physician for a prescription that includes your diagnosis and a request for a driving evaluation.  Call our department for an appointment at 419-226-9019.  Most insurance companies cover this evaluation.
