Our Care Team
Our team approach helps to ensure the most comprehensive, quality care for patients. In weekly multidisciplinary meetings and daily grand rounds, we carefully plan each patient’s treatment and how to best meet his or her particular needs.
Our nursing staff consists of more than 60 registered nurses, many of whom are oncology-certified and specifically trained in critical care. Nurse clinicians, certified nurse practitioners, research nurses, transplant coordinators, pharmacists, social workers, clinical psychologists, physical therapists, patient care assistants, dietitians and chaplains are all part of our experienced team and are dedicated to each and every patient’s success.
Our Physicians
James Essell, MDDr. James Essell, is the Medical Director of the The Jewish Hospital — Mercy Health Cincinnati Cancer and Cellular Therapy Center and has been with Jewish Hospital’s Cancer Center since 1997. Treating the patient, not solely the cancer, is the focus of the medical practice of James H. Essell, M.D. “I am with my patients throughout their journeys with cancer, and treat every patient as if he or she is a member of my own family.” Dr. Essell is board certified in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology. After graduating from medical school at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, he completed a residency and a fellowship at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center. Hematologic malignancies, benign hematology, and sarcoma are areas of interest for Dr. Essell. “Many of my family members have had cancer. As a physician, I want to make a difference. Cancer and the treatments for cancer can affect anyone and certainly affect all parts of the body, which makes for a challenging career.” |

Dr. E. Randolph BrounE. Randolph Broun, MD has been with the Cancer Center since 1996. Dr. Broun’s specialties are hematologic malignancies and bone marrow transplant. Of particular interest is the use of alternative donors in bone marrow transplant. After graduating from the St. Louis University School of Medicine, he completed Internal Medicine Residency at Indiana University and was Chief Resident in Medicine. He then completed Hematology Oncology fellowship at University of Texas – San Antonio and a fellowship in Bone Marrow Transplantation at Indiana University. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology. Before coming to Cincinnati, Dr. Broun served as director of the Bone Marrow Transplant Programs at St. Louis University Health Sciences Center and at Indiana University. He was also Medical Director of the Indiana University Hematology/Oncology Unit. He has numerous publications in the area of Blood and Marrow Transplant and Hematologic Malignancies. |

Miguel Islas-Ohlmayer, MDDr. Islas-Ohlmayer has been with the Cancer Center since 2010. He has a passion for helping patients who are dealing with difficult situations. “I want to help those with the most challenging conditions, such as leukemia.” Board certified in hematology and internal medicine, his specialties are medical oncology and hematology. He has a particular interest in hematologic malignancies and blood and marrow stem cell transplantation. After graduating from medical school at the Universidad de Monterrey School of Medicine, he completed a residency at Valley Baptist Medical Center/University of Texas Health Center. Dr. Islas-Ohlmayer also completed fellowships at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the University of Texas Health Science Center/Texas Transplant Institute. |

Edward A. Faber, Jr., DOEdward A. Faber, Jr., DO, is a medical oncologist and hematologist with OHC who joined our Cancer Center team in July 2013. Dr. Faber specializes in blood and marrow transplantation and is actively involved in cancer clinical trials and research. Dr. Faber received a Bachelor degree from Allegheny College, a master’s degree from Duquesne University, and his medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed internship and residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a fellowship in hematology/oncology at Michigan State University. Dr. Faber served as a panel member for the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and as the national physician advisor for the education project of the Association of Community Cancer Centers’ Improving Quality Care for Multiple Myeloma. Dr. Faber is board certified through the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association, the American Society of Hematology, and the American Society of Bone Marrow Transplant. “The most rewarding part of my work is the close relationships I form with my patients and their families. I consider it a privilege to care for them as they deal with the difficult diagnosis of cancer.” |
