While cures for cancer remain elusive, early detection combined with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and targeted therapies using drugs that target and disrupt specific molecular actions in cancer cells have helped improve the odds for survival of many cancers.

In recent years, immunotherapy has emerged as a promising new cancer treatment. Immunotherapy enlists and strengthens the power of a patient’s immune system to attack tumors. The most advanced immunotherapy is called CAR-T and in 2017, the Food and Drug Administration approved two CAR T-cell therapies, one for the treatment of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and the other for adults with advanced lymphomas. While cures for cancer remain elusive, early detection combined with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and targeted therapies using drugs that target and disrupt specific molecular actions in cancer cells have helped improve the odds for survival of many cancers.
