Mercy Health – Cincinnati has named Brian Gwyn as president of its Cincinnati market. Gwyn will join Mercy Health on Feb. 6.

In his new role, Gwyn will be responsible for all Mercy Health operations in the Cincinnati market, including oversight of Mercy Health – Cincinnati’s leadership team.

Gwyn brings more than 20 years of health care experience to his new role. He comes to Cincinnati from Atrium Health, where Gwyn served for nearly 15 years in a variety of leadership roles. Most recently he served as senior vice president and market president for Atrium’s west market with oversight of six facilities that provided care across seven counties, serving more than half a million residents. Prior to his role of a market vice president, Gwyn served Atrium as president of its Atrium Health Cleveland and Atrium Health Kings Mountain facilities.

Gwyn earned his bachelor’s degree, as well as a master’s degree in family and consumer services, from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. He earned his master’s degree in business administration in health care from Gardner Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C.

“Brian is a proven servant leader with a track record of driving operational growth and establishing strong work cultures and community partnerships,” said Don Kline, Mercy Health chief operating officer. “I am pleased Brian has chosen to join Mercy Health and the Cincinnati community. We will benefit greatly from his knowledge, passion for health care and the energy he will bring to advancing our Mission as well as our strategic and operational goals.”

Interim Cincinnati Market President Mark Townsend, MD, will assist Gwyn in a smooth transition to the president position. Gwyn assumes his new role following the retirement of former Mercy Health – Cincinnati President Dave Fikse last year.

In addition, Mercy Health – Cincinnati has announced that Ken James has been promoted to market chief operating officer, responsible for all hospital operations. James joined Mercy Health in 2016 and has served in a variety of roles, including president of Mercy Health – Anderson Hospital and Mercy Health – Clermont Hospital. His work has led to the launch of a graduate medical education program at Anderson Hospital, more than $7 million in renovations and expansions as well as the development of Eastgate Medical Center, which provides oncology, primary and multispecialty care.

“Over the last six years, Ken has helped to advance leading-edge, patient-centered health care on the east side of Cincinnati,” Kline said. “His leadership, commitment and patient focus will be an asset across the city as he seeks to improve the health and well-being of our patients and communities.”
