Mercy Health Celebrates 500th Watchman Procedure
Mercy Health – Springfield proudly announces the completion of its 500th Watchman procedure, marking a significant milestone in providing advanced stroke prevention for patients with Atrial fibrillation (A.Fib).
Since introducing the Watchman device in 2022, Mercy Health has helped hundreds of patients reduce their risk of stroke without long-term blood thinners. The device, shaped like a jellyfish, seals off the left atrial appendage where clots commonly form, offering peace of mind and improved quality of life.
“Reaching 500 procedures is a testament to our team’s dedication and expertise,” said Bashir Rawas, Director of the Cardiovascular Service Line for Mercy Health – Springfield. “Every patient we treat represents a life protected from the devastating impact of stroke.”
Candidates for the Watchman device include patients who:
- Have A.Fib and cannot take long-term anti-clotting medications
- Are prone to bleeding or falls
- Have experienced bleeding events
“The minimally invasive procedure is typically under 75 minutes, with most patients discharged within 24 hours and off anticoagulant medication within six months,” said Mercy Health’s Dr. Pradeep Gujja, Medical Director of Electrophysiology.
Dr. Gujja and Dr. Tariq Rizvi continue to lead this program, ensuring patients receive expert care close to home.
“Mercy Health - Springfield leadership has a special appreciation for our dedicated staff in the EP Lab, Cath Lab, Echo team, along with the Watchman clinical team at the hospital and the clinic for this achievement. Their commitment to patient centric care is unparalleled,” said Dr. Gujja.
