Mercy Health Launches Innovative Treatment for Atrial Fibrillation
Mercy Health – Springfield is now offering a new, advanced treatment option for patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib) called Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA). This breakthrough therapy will be led by board-certified electrophysiologist Dr. Pradeep Gujja, expanding access to one of the most cutting-edge, patient-centered solutions available for heart rhythm disorders.
The PFA procedure offers a non-thermal, tissue-selective approach to isolating the pulmonary veins, where AFib often originates. Unlike traditional thermal ablation techniques, PFA uses high-voltage electric fields to precisely target abnormal heart tissue while minimizing risk to surrounding areas such as the esophagus, phrenic nerve, and blood vessels.
“This new, innovative technology in treating atrial fibrillation allows us to perform procedures more safely, efficiently, and in a timely manner which could aid in faster recovery for patients,” said Dr. Pradeep Gujja, who also serves as Director of Electrophysiology at Mercy Health – Springfield Regional Medical Center. “The launch of this new treatment represents a significant milestone in cardiac care as well as Mercy Health’s ongoing commitment to providing the highest standard of care to our patients.”
AFib is a prevalent cardiac condition characterized by irregular heart rhythms, which can lead to serious complications such as stroke, heart failure and other cardiovascular issues. Patients with AFib often experience symptoms like palpitations, fatigue, and shortness of breath. With the introduction of PFA, Mercy Health – Springfield now offers a powerful new option for restoring quality of life in patients who may not have responded to medications or other treatments.
PFA has been validated in clinical trials and received FDA approval. Procedures utilizing this treatment have shown to be short and efficient, allowing for decreased anesthesia exposure, promoting same day discharge, and giving individuals the ability to resume their daily activities sooner so they can enjoy an improved quality of life post-treatment.
