Otolaryngology Residency Curriculum

General Otolaryngology — 45–50 months

The resident will perform daily rounds on otolaryngology patients, as well as perform consults on otolaryngology patients.

Perform an H&P from an otolaryngology perspective
Perform both bedside and intraoperative procedures based on specific level of resident
Perform emergency-based otolaryngology procedures and appropriate workups as an outpatient, including laboratory findings, imaging studies, assessment and plan, based on resident level

Objectives

  • Mastering/performing acute and chronic history and physical for otolaryngology patient
  • Formulate both an assessment and plan, based on otolaryngology principles and practices
  • Perform/master specific otolaryngology procedures and practices, including office and outpatient, as well as inpatient
  • Attend and participate in didactic sessions based on resident levels
  • Implement solutions to common otolaryngology practices
  • Participate in otolaryngology clinic on a regularly scheduled basis with mastery of outpatient practice principles and diagnostic skills

General Surgery — 6 Months

The resident will be present for and participate in general surgery rounds, procedures, and clinical time, as well as didactics. The resident will spend time on the trauma team and be responsible for taking trauma call on a rotating basis.

Objectives

  • Develop patient-oriented interview skills and be able to produce an organized, clear H&P with an emphasis on pre surgical work-up
  • Participate and initiate foundational surgical skills, including but not limited to, suturing, central lines, operative techniques, and endoscopic skills
  • Participate in and collaborate with team members in acute trauma situations with appropriate evidence based management
  • Develop patient-oriented clinical skills and master pre- and post-operative care of a general surgery patient with understanding and management of complications as well

Pediatric Ambulatory — 1 Month

This pediatric rotation is an office-based rotation with an assigned, board certified pediatrician, to ensure familiarity with common pediatric disorders and management. 

Objectives
The resident will develop the skills needed to perform a through H&P examination on the pediatric patient, including the newborn. The resident will master the principles governing the evaluation and management of the following pediatric disorders, which are commonly seen in the pediatric population.

Pediatric Otolaryngology — 4 Months

The resident will perform pediatric centric procedures including pan-endoscopy, pediatric airway evaluation, congenital neck masses, and pediatric oncology surgery. Manage and care of pediatric inpatient and post-operative otolaryngology centric diagnosis.

Objectives

  • Participate and actively formulate pediatric diagnosis and plan of treatment
  • Diagnosis and understand treatment paradigm for pediatric congenital and acquired airway syndromes
  • Develop clinical skills appropriate for examining and diagnosing pediatric Otolaryngology

SICU — 1 Month

The resident will be able to demonstrate competency in the diagnosis and management of critically ill patients with multiple medical/surgical conditions. Practice the skills needed to perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures required in the evaluation and management of critically ill patients. Become competent in the evaluation, diagnosis and management of Neurosurgical disorders. Become competent in the diagnosis and management of Neurosurgical trauma.

Objectives

  • The resident will demonstrate the ability to explain a differential diagnosis for the critically ill patient
  • The resident will demonstrate an understanding of the ethical and legal principles applicable to the care of critically ill patients
  • Demonstrate understanding of “Do not resuscitate” orders, advance directives, living wills

Emergency Medicine — 1 Month

Over the course of the five-year ENT residency, the ENT resident will be able to define the general protocols of EM. Describe treatment of various surgical and medical emergencies. The resident will distinguish the appropriate use of ancillary facilities pertaining to EM. This will be achieved by giving the resident supervised, progressive responsibilities.

Objectives
The resident will practice his/her interpersonal communication skills to obtain a sufficient patient H&P and perform a thorough physical examination of critical and non-critical patients in the emergency department
Will assess patients with multiple symptoms and able to identify the pathophysiologic process and diagnosis and determine the proper management
Develop personal techniques for stress management, physical and mental health, and critical incident stress debriefing that will promote wellness and career longevity

Anesthesiology — 1 Month

The resident will be given instruction on proper maintenance of the airway and ventilation technique. Regional block anesthesia and spinal tap procedures will also be included. The resident will be supervised, and given progressive responsibilities.

Objectives

  • To demonstrate competency in the evaluation, diagnosis and management of patients with upper airway failure
  • To apply the principles of general regional and local anesthesia to patients presenting to the ED
  • To demonstrate proficiency in the use of equipment necessary to manage acute airway emergencies

Neurotology — 4–6 Months

The resident will attend UH Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The resident will spend at least four and as many as six months in specific neurotology-based practice and will be responsible for the history, differential diagnosis, diagnostic and therapeutic options in a variety of otology topics.

Objectives

  • Perform basic to advanced otologic procedures including mastoidectomy with reconstruction and tympanoplasty
  • Learn and be able to interpret basic and complicated audiograms with the formulation of a differential diagnosis and treatment modality
  • Apply anatomy to radiographic procedures for diagnostics
  • Diagnose and treat a variety of vestibular diseases and be able to identify both medical and surgical treatment options
