As we continue to strive to be the healthcare provider of choice in the area, we are making sure that we are equipped with the best tools for diagnosing conditions, as well as the most experienced registered nurses and technologists dedicated to providing the best possible care.
Our radiologists are all board certified by the American College of Radiology.
Medical Imaging Services:
- Diagnostic Radiology
- Digital Mammography - Screenings
- DEXA Scan (Bone Density)
- CT Scan
- PET/CT Scan
- Nuclear Medicine
- Ultrasound & Non Invasive Vascular Lab
State-of-the-art equipment, such as CR (computed radiography) and digital radiography. Our technologists are all ARRT certified. In addition to general radiography, our services include:
Upper GI studies
Swallowing function studies
Dexascan (bone density imaging)
With digital mammography, you can expect:
- A much shorter exam time - approximately half the time of film-based mammograms
- Greater accuracy and detection - with improved contrast between dense and non-dense tissue
- Instantly correctable scans - to ensure a clear image and avoid having to schedule another appointment
DEXA Scan (Bone Density)
A bone density scan is a low dose x-ray that checks an area of the body such as the hip or spine for signs of mineral loss and bone thinning. It is a simple, painless and non-invasive procedure that takes approximately 15 minutes to perform.
We also offer fracture assessment (VFA). It is a low-dose x-ray scan of the spine that provides high-resolution images for the precise detection of the smallest vertebral deformities to detect osteoporosis at its earliest stage, enabling immediate treatment to minimize deterioration of bone structure.
CT exams are used when people are ill, injured or when a physician suspects a medical problem that is not easily detectable from a conventional physical examination. A CT assists physicians in providing a non-invasive diagnosis of a wide variety of conditions.
The CT department offers on-site 24-hour coverage and provides a full range of services, from diagnostic imaging to CT guided interventional procedures. Imaging may be enhanced using oral contrast or intravenous contrast as indicated by diagnosis and patient status.
We are pleased to offer the most advanced CT imaging technology in the GE LightSpeed 128 slice CT scanner, a sophisticated CT imaging system that can lower the radiation dose using ASIR, new technology that allows for dose reduction in patients by enabling clinicians to reduce patient radiation dose by up to 40 percent while maintaining diagnostic image quality.
Available Monday through Saturday, and is the FIRST - FIXED faith based PET/CT unit within Mahoning County
A PET/CT can detect cancer and other diseases before they are evident on other imaging tests. By injecting a small amount of radioisotope into the blood stream, PET/CT demonstrates the function of different organs or the body, as well as measures the metabolic activity of cells in the body.
Our 1.5T MRI unit offers a wide range of exams, including magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). This helps diagnosis torn ligaments, cancer, brain and spinal cord conditions by creating highly detailed images of organs, tissues and other body structures.
Our nuclear medicine department offers equipment for both Planar and SPECT imaging. A wide range of diagnostic procedures are available including lymphoscintigraphy and nuclear stress test (both pharmacologic and exercise). Therapeutic procedures including the I-131 radioiodine for thyroid cancer or hyperthyroidism.
Ultrasound and Non- Invasive Vascular Lab
Our ultrasound and Non-Invasive Vascular Lab offer a full range of services including:
- Carotid duplex ultrasound
- Venous duplex ultrasound (for DVT, vein mapping and venous incompetence)
- Visceral vascular duplex ultrasound
- General ultrasound procedures such as thyroid, abdomen and pelvis
- Interventional procedures such as biopsies, drainage aspirations and thrombin injections
- Peripheral arterial physiologic tests (extremity pressures, doppler wave forms and exercise testing)
- Arterial duplex ultrasound
Our Ultrasound Department and Non-Invasive Vascular Lab are staffed by a team of ARDMS Registered technologists
Lung Cancer Screening Program
Did you know that survival rates for lung cancer patients increase when their cancer is detected and treated early? It’s true. Unfortunately only 1 in 8 people with lung cancer are diagnosed in the early stages of the disease. National studies have shown that screening a specific population for lung cancer with a CT scan can reduce the risk of dying from lung cancer by 20 percent. Lung cancer screening is quick and easy, and the radiation exposure is very low.
For this reason, Mercy Health launched a Lung Cancer Screening Program that offers a low-cost service based on state-of-the-art screening methods for lung cancer in high-risk patients.
Who Should Be Screened?
Screening is recommended for people who are at a high risk for lung cancer:
Age 55 or older
Current smoking history of 30+ pack years
Quit smoking within the past 15 years with a prior smoking history
How Does it Work?
If you have a doctor, contact them for a referral. Simply tell them you want to take part in the Mercy Health Lung Cancer Screening Program. If you meet the criteria for lung cancer screening, your doctor will be able to schedule your chest CT at a Mercy Health facility.
If you do not have a doctor, call Mercy Health Youngstown at 877-654-8594 or visit Find a Doctor.
The results of your scan are sent to your doctor. Depending on the results, you will be advised about the need for continued screening or additional testing and treatment. Fortunately, most health insurances now cover early screening for lung cancer.
