Overview

For years, surgery has been the first line of attack against breast cancer. The goal is precise, targeted surgery that tries to preserve as much of the healthy breast and surrounding area as possible.

Breast surgery is one part of the plan that we all develop to treat your breast cancer. It is hard for some women to think about losing a breast, which is also known as having a mastectomy. Fortunately, many women can be successfully treated with a lumpectomy, which only removes a portion of the breast.

Services We Offer

  • Lumpectomy surgery
  • Mastectomy
  • Rehabilitation and therapy
  • Breast reconstruction
  • Hidden scar breast cancer surgery

Lumpectomy

Lumpectomy surgery is also known as a breast-conserving surgery or partial mastectomy. In a lumpectomy, a breast surgeon removes the cancerous tumor and surrounding tissue from your breast, while preserving most of your breast. It is usually followed by radiation treatment to the remaining tissue. This combination results in the same survival rate as if you had your breast completely removed.

Mastectomy

In a simple, or total, mastectomy, surgeons remove the entire breast, but do not cut away any lymph nodes from under the arm or muscle tissue from beneath the breast. This procedure is used to treat noninvasive breast cancer.

In a modified radical mastectomy, surgeons remove the entire breast and some axillary (underarm) lymph nodes.

Rehabilitation and Therapy

Mercy Health’s rehabilitation and therapy services provide targeted programs to treat lymphedema (swelling) and shoulder issues, including range of motion and pain, that result from surgery and/or chemotherapy.

Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is a surgery that restores the look and feel of your breast(s) after mastectomy.

Hidden Scar Breast Cancer Surgery

Hidden scar breast cancer surgery uses unique retractors that hold open and light surgical incisions, allowing the surgeon to remove the tumor and leave only a small scar. That scar will eventually fade completely, leaving the patient with little to no visible reminder of surgery.
