Overview

Anatomic pathology, often called anatomical pathology, refers to medical lab testing of organs, cell clusters and tissue specimens taken from the human body. At Mercy Health, our anatomic pathology labs use state-of-the-art technology to identify tumors or cancers, evaluate liver and kidney disorders, diagnose various infections and autoimmune diseases. This is all done using samples gathered during your physician visit or surgery. For example, an anatomic pathologist can test a tissue sample removed during your surgery to determine if cancer cells are present.

The primary sub-specialties within anatomic pathology are surgical pathology – including breast, gynecological, endocrine, gastrointestinal, GU, soft tissue, head and neck and dermatopathology – hematopathology, cytopathology, neuropathology and medical microbiology. Our anatomic pathologists utilize all tests, methods and equipment at their disposal to help our doctors and specialists provide you with a timely diagnosis and effective treatment.
