Overview

Eye health is an important part of overall health. If you’re experiencing any type of vision problem or eye discomfort, Mercy Health is here to help. We offer expert, safe treatments for cataracts, glaucoma and other eye problems to help you see clearly once again.

Cataracts

Affecting more than 24 million Americans, cataracts are one of the most common ocular disorders. Most cataracts are caused by a buildup of protein in the lens of the eye. This protein usually builds up slowly over time and happens naturally as part of the aging process. Less common causes of cataracts include eye injuries or health problems such as diabetes.

The most common symptoms of cataracts include:

  • Cloudy or blurry vision
  • Fading of colors
  • Glare
  • Poor night vision
  • Double vision
Cataract treatment can include stronger prescription glasses, but often cataract surgery is the only effective treatment option. This procedure is very safe and generally does not require an overnight stay.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is another one of the most common diseases of the eye. It’s usually caused by a buildup of fluid in the eye. This excess fluid increases eye pressure, which can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss.

The best type of glaucoma treatment is getting regular eye exams to help prevent it in the first place. This is because typically when vision loss is first noticed, glaucoma is already in advanced stages. Laser and traditional glaucoma surgery can help prevent glaucoma, but they can’t reverse the loss of vision that the disease has already caused.
