What is a liver function blood test?

A liver function test is a group of blood tests that check how well your liver is working. These tests measure liver enzymes, proteins, and bilirubin levels to look for signs of liver damage, infection, or disease. It’s a simple way for doctors to check your liver health.

Who is a candidate for a liver function test?

You may need this test if you:

  • Have symptoms like yellowing skin (jaundice), dark urine, or belly pain
  • Take medications that can affect the liver
  • Have a history of liver disease or hepatitis
  • Drink alcohol heavily or have a history of alcohol use disorder
  • Have conditions like diabetes or obesity that increase liver disease risk

What to expect during a liver function test

A small blood sample will be drawn from your arm. The test only takes a few minutes. Some liver tests may require you to fast for several hours before the blood draw—your doctor will let you know if that’s needed.

What are the risks for a liver function test?

The test is very low risk. You might feel a quick pinch when the needle goes in, and some people have minor bruising afterward. Serious side effects are very rare.

What does recovery from a liver function test entail?

There’s no recovery needed. You can return to your normal activities right away. Your doctor will review your test results and let you know if further testing or treatment is needed.
