Ultrasound is diagnostic procedure that bounces high-frequency sound waves off parts of the body. The returning "echoes" are saved as images. There is no radiation exposure associated with ultrasound procedures.

Ultrasound images the pelvic and abdominal organs, such as, female and male reproductive system, kidneys, gallbladder, liver, pancreas.  Ultrasound demonstrates breast abnormalities, thyroid abnormalities and soft tissue densities.  Ultrasound is most frequently identified with revealing development of fetal growth in pregnant women.  Certain biopsies can be accomplished with ultrasound guidance.
