Mercy Health Physician First Orthopaedic Surgeon in Ohio to Offer Mako Robotic Technology Total Knee Replacement

Mercy Health - Cincinnati, which provides advanced, quality, compassionate care in your neighborhood through its care network, announces that orthopaedic surgeon Suresh Nayak, MD is the first doctor in all of Ohio and Greater Cincinnati to offer a total knee replacement using the Mako robotic arm-assisted surgery system.

Dr. Nayak performed the state’s first total knee replacement procedure using the robotic-arm assisted technology together with the Stryker Triathlon Total Knee System at Mercy Health – Anderson Hospital on March 7.  The Mako system is a surgeon-controlled robotic arm that enables accurate alignment and placement of implants.

“Positioning implants with maximum accuracy is the key to improving the patient’s comfort and quality of life after knee replacement surgery,” said Dr. Nayak, “The Triathlon uses CT scan data to create a 3D model of the patient’s anatomy so that I can plan the ideal placement of the patient’s new knee.”

Prior to surgery, the Mako robotic arm-assisted surgery system creates a patient-specific 3D model to pre-plan the knee replacement. During surgery, Dr. Nayak guides the robotic arm, following the patient’s personalized plan. This allows Dr. Nayak to remove only the diseased bone, preserving healthy bone and soft tissue, and assists in positioning the implant based on the patient’s anatomy, enabling a new level of accuracy and helping ensure proper functioning of the knee. The results include enhanced stability, improved implant positioning and strong patient satisfaction.

Dr. Nayak offers Mako total knee replacement, as well as Mako total hip replacement and Mako partial knee replacement, a precise, robotic arm-assisted knee resurfacing procedure for patients not in need of full knee replacement. At The Jewish Hospital – Mercy Health, orthopaedic surgeon and Mercy Health Physician Frank Noyes, MD performs Mako partial knee replacement.
