Mercy Health is proud to announce the winners of the 2026 Physician of the Year awards, an honor recognizing outstanding medical professionals for their dedication, compassion, and excellence in patient care.

Nursing and ancillary staff, highlighting the deep appreciation and respect for many physicians across both hospitals. The recipients of the 2026 Physician of the Year awards are:

  • Jody Short, DO: Interventional Neurology, Mercy Health - Springfield Regional Medical Center
  • Aijaz Ahmed, MD: Internal Medicine, Mercy Health - Urbana Hospital

Dr. Jody Short has been instrumental in building and advancing the hospital’s neuroscience and stroke programs, playing a key leadership role in achieving its Thrombectomy Capable Stroke Center designation. His clinical expertise, decisive action in critical moments, and tireless commitment to patient care have transformed lives across the region. In addition to his hospital work, Dr. Short dedicates countless hours to educating EMS partners, colleagues, and community members on stroke recognition and treatment.

“Dr. Short’s impact on the health of our community and on the growth of our neuroscience service line has been extraordinary,” said Mercy Health Director of Neurosciences Chase Collins. “His leadership and clinical expertise have been foundational in ensuring our community has access to advanced, life-saving stroke care.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Aijaz Ahmed has been a trusted and deeply respected physician in the Urbana community for more than three decades. Known for putting patients first, Dr. Ahmed consistently goes above and beyond to ensure every individual feels heard, respected, and genuinely cared for. Beyond his clinical excellence, Dr. Ahmed is a valued mentor and leader within the practice. He fosters a supportive, collaborative environment where colleagues feel encouraged to grow and succeed.

“Dr. Ahmed consistently exemplifies the highest standards of medicine through his compassion, professionalism, and commitment to excellence,” said Stephanie Ashworth, lead nationally registered certified medical assistant. “He approaches every patient encounter with empathy, respect, and a genuine desire to improve their well-being.”
