Mercy Health - Urbana Hospital is celebrating 75 years of caring for Urbana and its surrounding communities, marking a milestone anniversary on Sept. 24, 2026.
First conceived by local business and civic leaders in 1944 and opened in September 1951 as Mercy Memorial Hospital, the facility became Urbana's first hospital and has since evolved into a modern health care destination providing emergency, inpatient, outpatient, surgical and specialty services close to home.
Over the past seven and a half decades, Mercy Health - Urbana Hospital has continuously adapted to meet the changing health care needs of the community. What began as a 50-bed hospital founded by the Sisters of Mercy has grown into a critical access hospital offering advanced diagnostic technology, rehabilitation programs, cancer care and innovative telehealth capabilities.
"75 years is an extraordinary milestone, and it reflects the trust our community has placed in us generation after generation," said Jamie Houseman, president of Mercy Health - Urbana Hospital. "Our hospital was built on a commitment to serve others with compassion. While health care has changed dramatically over the years, our mission remains the same. Today, Mercy Health — Urbana Hospital provides a broad range of inpatient and outpatient services, including emergency care, orthopedics, oncology, sleep medicine and rehabilitation services. The hospital is recognized as an Acute Stroke Ready hospital by the Joint Commission and is proud to have been recognized by the American Heart Association as a Rural Stroke Gold center for excellence in stroke care. Since 1951, through investment and partnership, the hospital has continued to expand services and technology so patients can receive high-quality care closer to home.
That commitment has been reflected through significant investments in the Urbana campus. In recent years, Mercy Health, its Foundation and numerous generous donors have invested millions of dollars in facility improvements, including renovations to the pharmacy, an outpatient lab, the emergency department and inpatient units as well as the addition of on-site mammography.
The hospital's growth has extended beyond facilities and technology and has been strengthened by the generosity of donors whose philanthropic support has helped expand access to care throughout the community. Programs such as Community Paramedicine have helped address barriers to care by connecting vulnerable patients with follow-up services, resources and support after they leave the hospital. In 2025, Mercy Health further expanded access to specialty care through the opening of the Mercy Health - Urbana Cancer Center, a state-of-the-art facility made possible through investments from Mercy Health, the Foundation and generous community donors. The center offers hematology and oncology services, infusion therapy, nurse navigation and access to specialists through Mercy Health's affiliation with The James Cancer Network. By bringing these services closer to home, the cancer center allows many patients to receive treatment near their loved ones and support systems.
