Bone density screening is a simple, painless test conducted at the Springfield Regional Imaging Center to determine whether a person is experiencing osteoporosis, a loss of bone mass that weakens bones and can lead to fractures.
The density test is conducted with the most reliable equipment available for diagnosing osteoporosis. Four out of five persons with osteoporosis are women. Postmenopausal women are at greatest risk. Other factors that increase risk are:
- Menopause before age 45
- Caucasian race or Asian ethnicity
- Thin or small build
- Family history
- Smoking and excessive alcohol use
- Inactive lifestyle and/or chronic use of medications such as steroids, excessive thyroid hormones and certain anticonvulsants.
Bone density testing also is available for men at the Springfield Regional Imaging Center.
