Resident Stipend/Fringe Benefits
SALARY PGY 1: $50,000 PGY 2: $51,000 PGY 3: $52,000 PGY 4: $53,000 PGY 5: $54,000
HEALTH INSURANCE Available for resident and eligible dependents as per hospital policy. Includes the following benefits: medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision care administered through an approved provider program.
LONG TERM DISABILITY INSURANCE Payable after 90 days in the amount of 60% of monthly stipend.
LIFE INSURANCE Provided for in the amount of one time the resident’s annual salary.
PROFESSIONAL LIABILITY INSURANCE Provided in the form of an occurrence policy for coverage of all residency related clinical activities.
PAID TIME OFF (PTO)/VACATION/PERSONAL AND SICK DAYS PGY 1: 15 workdays PGY 2 - 5: 18 workdays
LEAVE OF ABSENCE Available according to hospital policy. Includes medical, family medical (FMLA), military and personal leave of absence.
BOARD REVIEW COURSE Provided for senior level residents, subject to program director approval.
EDUCATION ALLOWANCE & CONFERENCE TIME Provided for attendance of one educational conference per year with the approval of the program director.
PGY 1: $1,000 PGY 2 – 5: $1,500
MOVING EXPENSE ALLOWANCE Available for eligible residents at an amount not to exceed $1,000 per family. Subject to IRS rules, original receipts required. Program Directors determine eligibility.
MEALS Provided at $225 food allowance in the hospital cafeteria per month per resident.
PARKING Provided at no cost in an attached and gated parking garage.
ON-CALL QUARTERS Provided for each resident when on call and furnished with appropriate amenities.
OTHER RESOURCES Available resources for resident use include: electronic medical record, medical library, media resources, graphic arts, protective services, infection control, laboratory and radiologic services, messenger/transport services, risk management, counseling services, etc.
CHILD CARE Located within walking distance of the hospital is a certified child care center which provides flexible hours of service. Residents are eligible for an employee discount.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Provided in the form of internet access, medical informatics programs/ clinical data bases.
RECREATIONAL FACILITIES Located on the premises, free, state of the art employee fitness center for use by all employees.

Resident Eligibility and Selection
The selection process for all residencies, however, includes an emphasis on consideration of the applicant’s preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity.
In accordance with ACGME Essentials, residency applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment to accredited residency programs at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital:
- Graduates of Medical Schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
- Graduates of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
- Graduates of Dental Schools in the United States accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA) of the ADA.
- Graduates of Dental Schools outside United States and Canada who have successfully passed National Boards Part I and II or the Ohio State Dental Boards.
Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications:
- Have received a currently valid certificate from the Education Commission of Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG),
- Have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. Licensing jurisdiction, or
- Have completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME accredited medical school.
- All applicants must appear for personal interviews to be eligible for final selection in the residency program.
The selection process considers the applicant's preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, medical knowledge, personal and communication skills, and qualities such as motivation and integrity.
Residency programs do not discriminate with regard to gender, race, age, religion, national origin, cultural background, disability, or veteran status in accordance with the Department of Education’s Non-Discrimination Policy.
The actual selection of candidates to be interviewed and ranked is the responsibility of each residency program. The selection process is as follows:
- The residency program director in collaboration with the Residency Program's Education Committee determines whether an applicant’s academic records and supporting materials reflect adequate qualifications for residency training.
- If this is the case, an interview with the applicant is requested by the Residency Program Director through the Program Coordinator.
- All applicants must appear for personal interviews to be eligible for final selection in the Residency Programs.
- After the program director, attending faculty, and residents review the qualified applicants’ files, each Department’s Education Committee, including resident representatives, meets to rank applicants in order of preference for residency position.
- These confidential rank order lists are submitted to the Department of Medical Education for final verification and processing by the Assistant to the Director of Medical Education. Selection is made through i.e. the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), using a standardized ERAS residency application with review of a personal statement, reference letters, a Dean’s Letter, and depending on the aforementioned qualifications, a personal interview with the residency program director and other members of the residency attending faculty and residents.
St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital requires all international medical school graduates to hold a valid J1 Visa unless they have been granted permanent residence or are already a U.S. Citizen.
