Message from the Director

The Department of Emergency Medicine at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital is completely committed to its residency training program and is backed by the strength of the Mercy Health system. We are very proud of our staff's dedication and investment in preparing the next generation of outstanding emergency medicine physicians.

The foundation of our program is exceptional didactic and clinical training. Our primary training site at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital is supplemented by our nearby Level 1 trauma center and sister hospital, St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. To support our residents we provide a family atmosphere and supportive learning environment. Our residents enjoy graded clinical responsibility and the opportunity to develop their teaching ability and skill by participating in the education of the medical students who call our facility home. All of this allows our residents to hone not only the basic skills of medical knowledge and patient care, but to develop the art of emergency department flow and interpersonal skills with other medical personnel.

We are proud of our core teaching staff and their accomplishments. We consistently support their continued education, as this is necessary to provide up-to-date medical knowledge and evidence-based medicine to our residents and students. We support the development and use of technology and novel teaching systems including our simulation lab. As part of Mercy Health, we have been named a 2015 Most Wired health care system for using technology to improve health care. We also use this technology to bring these advanced teaching techniques to our residents and staff.

Our faculty and staff are outstanding mentors, educators and hands on clinicians. We encourage clinical and bench research through our clinician-researchers as well as academic researchers. We recruit faculty and residents who demonstrate exceptional skills in the areas of work ethic, interpersonal interaction, and compassion. We constantly review our program and respond quickly to suggestions and improvements. The key to our program is our residents and their ownership of the program and its success. The residents are actively involved in many of the decisions that affect their training program. This great combination of superior, well-rounded faculty with broad academic and research endeavors makes our training program one of the best.

We welcome you to visit this beautiful part of Ohio to discuss our residency opportunities and the area amenities. We thank you for your interest and hope to hear from you soon.

Thomas Gifford, D.O.
