Mercy Health – Cincinnati Now has Third AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill Available in Bridgetown for Injured Runners and Patients with a Variety of Conditions

Mercy Health – Cincinnati, which provides advanced, quality care with compassion in your neighborhood through its care network, now has a third AlterG Anti-Gravity treadmill available at the new Bridgetown location. Mercy Health is the only healthcare provider in the tristate to offer this technology to patients at three different locations. The Bridgetown AlterG joins two existing units already in operation at the Anderson Township location since January 2015 and the Mason location since April 2016.

The AlterG features an inflatable air chamber that surrounds the user’s lower body and gently lifts him or her off the treadmill to achieve a body weight that’s 20-100% of the user’s actual weight. In other words, if you weigh 200 pounds and use the AlterG at the 20% setting, you can run as if you weighed 40 pounds. This dramatically lowers the impact and stress on your joints and muscles, allowing the user to rehabilitate and/or train at accelerated rates. Individuals can also experience what it would feel like to exercise if they weighed less by setting the unit accordingly.

The AlterG Anti-Gravity treadmill can help injured runners by allowing them to continue to train even as they recover from an injury and can serve as an alternate training method for all athletes. The AlterG is also a powerful rehabilitation tool for post-operative patients, allowing patients to start partial weight bearing exercise immediately after surgery. Patients experience the benefits of rehabilitative exercise with less pain and reduced stress to healing tissues.

It can provide benefits for patients with a host of other conditions as well. For example, patients with foot, knee or hip arthritis that causes pain when walking can take part in pain-free exercise. With the AlterG, patients with metabolic syndromes, a group of conditions which include increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels can use the AlterG to ease into a wellness and fitness program which could lower their risk of developing heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

“With the AlterG, patients with a variety of conditions can run and walk without bearing their entire weight. This reduces the impact on their bodies so they can rehab better, train smarter and exercise safely,” said Michael A. McCormack, Jr., PT, MHS, SCS, ATC, Director of Orthopaedics and Sports Rehabilitation, Mercy Health.

“AlterG gives patients all the gain without the pain,” said Steve Basta, CEO of AlterG. “Our unique approach to unweighted physical therapy preserves natural body movement and provides benefits for a broad range of medical conditions.”
