Mercy Health announced that starting in mid-2023, it will refer patients requiring open-heart surgery to Anderson Hospital and Fairfield Hospital. Mercy Health’s open-heart surgery teams will come together at these two hospitals with the goal of enhancing the experience of care for patients while avoiding duplication of resources and decreasing the total cost of care for patients.

“We are making this deliberate, strategic decision with the best interest of our patients in mind,” said Mark Townsend, MD, Mercy Health – Cincinnati interim market president. “By bringing our world-class open heart surgery teams together in two focused centers of excellence, we ensure that patients are receiving care from surgeons with extensive experience in caring for these complex health issues. It also allows Mercy Health to be a good steward of its resources, investing in the latest, most advanced open-heart surgery tools and technology in two locations versus four. Avoiding costly duplication in one service line opens the opportunity for investment in other destination service lines, such as neurology, cancer, etc., ultimately providing patients with the best experience of care for their specialized needs.”

The Anderson Hospital and Fairfield Hospital service areas are highly complementary and easily accessible via Interstate 275. The connected nature of Mercy Health hospitals helps to ensure smooth, complimentary care at each site.

Additionally, bringing the open-heart programs together will allow for more timely access to care for other services at The Jewish Hospital and West Hospital, and increase the ability for those facilities to expand program offerings in other service lines.

“The centralization of our open-heart surgical programs to Anderson and Fairfield Hospitals will allow us to enhance our current offerings while still maintaining comprehensive cardiac care at The Jewish Hospital and West Hospital,” said Kevin J. Cochran, MD, Mercy Health cardiologist and director on the Mercy Health – Cincinnati Board of Directors. “This will allow us to continue to invest in state-of-the-art innovation and enhance quality initiatives. In addition, this is the pathway for Mercy Health to deliver the best care for our patients in the communities close to where they live.”

Mercy Health has and will continue to offer comprehensive cardiology services at each of its greater Cincinnati hospitals, including Kings Mills Hospital, opening in 2023, as detailed below:
  • The Jewish Hospital will continue to offer comprehensive cardiovascular care, including heart attack care, complex interventional cardiology and electrophysiology services as well as thoracic surgery. The Jewish Hospital is also a regional destination for neuroscience and high-end oncology services.
  • West Hospital will also continue to offer comprehensive cardiovascular care, including heart attack care, complex interventional cardiology and electrophysiology services, interventional peripheral vascular therapy, limb salvage and thoracic surgery.
  • Clermont Hospital will continue to offer heart attack care and comprehensive cardiac testing including cardiac stress, echo and cardiac nuclear medicine testing. Clermont Hospital is also a regional destination for psychiatry and behavioral health services.
  • Kings Mills Hospital, opening fall of 2023, will offer heart attack care and interventional cardiology services.
“We continuously evaluate our services and programs to help ensure we are delivering on our commitment to serve our patients with high-quality, compassionate care while driving ongoing improvement, quality outcomes and growth in each of our facilities,” Dr. Townsend said.

Providers will work individually with their patients to ensure they have all necessary information related to their care.
