St. Rita’s introduces Abbott’s Absorb™ Bioresorbable Stent

(Lima, November 25, 2016) Since the 1980s, cardiologists have been using tiny wired mesh stents to help treat narrow or blocked arteries, and restore blood flow to the heart. As times change, new resources become available. Our cardiology team at St. Rita’s now have access to a new type of stent – Abbott’s Absorb™ bioresorbable stent. This stent was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in July, and is the only fully dissolving heart stent.

Dr. Hemraj Makwana, interventional cardiologist at St. Rita’s, has had the opportunity to put in an Absorb stent. Since the stent is naturally dissolving (like stitches), the treated artery can pulse and flex naturally. This also means that the naturally absorbing stent may reduce the potential of future blockages that can occur with metal stents.

This stent is new to our area, and our cardiology team looks forward to bringing this new medical advancement to our medical center.
