If you need to lose a significant amount of weight and feel like surgery is your last chance to have a healthy body and live a normal life, then bariatric surgery may be a wise decision for you. Surgical weight loss has been proven to reduce the risk of weight-related health problems that put many people’s lives in danger, such as heart disease, diabetes and severe sleep apnea.

If you’re considering surgical weight loss to help you be healthier and lead a more active life, you need to meet the following medical criteria:

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You have an unsuccessful history of trying to lose weight through diet and exercise.
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is 40 or higher. (Someone with a BMI of 40 or more is usually at least 100 pounds over his or her recommended weight.)
  • Your BMI is 35 to 39.9 and you have a serious weight-related health problem (called a comorbidity), such as: type 2 diabetes, hypertension requiring multiple medications, sleep apnea, significant cardiopulmonary problems, obesity related cardiomyopathy, and physical problems severely interfering with function.
