Electrocardiogram or ECG: is a simple test that records the electrical activity of the heart. This test, which can be a 12 -lead or an 18-lead ECG, is completed by having the patient lie on their back on a bed or cart. A sticky patch (electrode) is applied to each ankle and wrist. Six additional patches are applied to the chest area. If an 18 Lead ECG is ordered, patches also will be applied to the back. A wire is then attached to each patch and electrical activity of the heart is recorded. It takes about 5–10 minutes to attach the patches and run a clear tracing. It may be necessary to shave the patient's hair or chafe (rub) the skin in order to optimize the electrical conduction.
