Program Overview
The Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center provides a comprehensive education for residents in all aspects of emergency care. Our program emphasizes a physiological approach to medical illness within an interdisciplinary team care model, in which the resident plays a key role.
It is our goal is to provide opportunities for residents to excel in their chosen field, whether it be subspecialty training, clinical practice or academic medicine. We are committed ensuring physicians have time to pursue personal and professional interests, while developing leadership skills through participation in research, medical education and hospital committees. The broad range of scholarly activities available includes peer-reviewed clinical research, case reports, quality improvement projects, medical education initiatives, and presentations at regional and national conferences.
As the largest health care provider and largest employer in our region, Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center cares for nearly 200,000 patients each year. The Emergency Department sees approximately 57,250 patients each year, with an admission rate of 24%, reflecting a high level of case acuity.
Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center is part of Bon Secours Mercy Health, the largest health care system in Ohio. We offer a full spectrum of high-quality services, including heart and vascular care, cancer treatment, neurosciences, orthopedics, trauma and emergency medicine, wound and hyperbaric care, maternity and pediatric services, sports medicine, rehabilitation, wellness programs, podiatric surgery, weight management, behavioral health, and home health and hospice.
Program Aims:
Core EM Education:
Robust comprehensive emergency medicine education supported by seasoned board-certified EM faculty members.
Diverse patient population with high acuity and complex pathologies.
Opportunities to perform large numbers of high-acuity-low-occurrence (HALO) procedures during training.
Community and rural experience:
Rural experience, with regularly scheduled shifts in Putnam County Ambulatory Care Center free-standing Emergency Department.
Outreach opportunities to engage with members of the Lima and surrounding community
Comprehensive support and opportunities:
Support for away rotations (e.g. well-furnished apartment)
Excellent moonlighting opportunities
Faculty mentoring of residents from Day 1
