Kidney Stone Center
Lima Urology has created a fast-track kidney stone service for people experiencing symptoms such as pain in the side, nausea, vomiting or problems urinating. With a referral from your primary care doctor, the emergency department or an urgent care center, we guarantee that one of our providers will treat you within 48 hours – even on the weekend.
Signs and Symptoms of a kidney stone
A kidney stone may not cause symptoms; however, the most common symptoms of kidney stones are blood in the urine or pain. The pain may be intermittent and change in intensity, as well as location, depending on the stone location and degree of obstruction.
Other symptoms may include:
- Pain on urination
- Urinating small amounts of urine
- Pink, red or brown urine
- Nausea and vomiting
- Severe pain in the side and back, below the ribs
- Pain that spreads to the lower abdomen and groin
- Cloudy or foul-smelling urine, fever or chills, if an infection is present
- Persistent need to urinate
Advanced kidney stone treatment
Kidney stones are one of the most common conditions seen by the specialists at Lima Urology. Treatment varies according to the location and size of your kidney stone and the symptoms you are experiencing. Many people are able to pass their kidney stone without being hospitalized. We will work with you and your primary doctor to create a plan that may include:
- Pain medication
- Antibiotics if an infection is found
- Medication to help you pass the kidney stone in your urine
- A procedure using sound waves to break up the stone
- Endoscopic removal
- Surgery or other treatment to address the cause of your kidney stone
Prevention and ongoing supportOur providers also will teach you ways to reduce the risk of future kidney stones, such as making changes to your diet and drinking more water. If you have an increased risk, we can prescribe medication and provide check-ups.
